Time to Go For It! MMM 8-30-2010

Monday Morning Message, August 30, 2010

This time of year always makes me think about fresh starts and exciting new beginnings.  The school year has already begun for most systems, but in my youth, we always seemed to start school around Labor Day.  New teachers or if you are a teacher, new students always brought a sense of excitement and relief.  Excitement because you always know there will be some surprises in the new year, and relief because even the worst student and the most difficult teacher usually turn out to be not nearly as bad as you thought.

This is an invitation to take advantage of this break from summer; the start of a new academic year; and the fact that there are still four months left in this year to follow your dreams.  The timing and how we view how God wants to use you was illustrated in a sermon from Rick Duncan a few years ago where he encourage listeners to look at things that come into our lives as invitations, not interruptions.  This is not only a great way to view people in our lives, but also the things which we are doing that cause us to be too busy for the things of God.  Which of the following have you been too busy to do?

1. Quiet time and Bible study
2. Volunteer to help in a ministry that needs you
3. Spend some time to actually get to know your neighbor
4. Connect with a family member with whom you have had a strained relationship
5. Connect in a small group at your church to help you grow
6. Seek out a mission trip either domestic or international that uses your skills
7. You name it.   (send me a note if you wish and I will check on you in a few months)

It was this teaching from Rick along with a sermon from Ken Whitten that he shared on the last Sunday of 2009 entitled “Go For It” that convicted me to find a way to share the book KINGDOM GAINS (more on that in next week’s MMM).  If Jesus is in the right place in your life, you will find victory instead of feeling like you are wandering in the wilderness.  What do you need encouragement for right now?  Stop with your regrets and start today to resolve that I am going to “GO FOR IT!”

Galatians 5:13-14 (RSV) “For you were called to freedom brethren; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love be servants of one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.””
