Does 1.3 Million Mean Success? MMM 2-28-2011

Monday Morning Message, February 28, 2011

A recent obituary in the Wall Street Journal reminded us of the special life of Dr. Bernard Nathanson.  At one time in his life, he called himself a Jewish atheist, but in 1996, he converted to and was baptized into the Catholic Church.  This was a modern day version of the Apostle Paul becoming a Christian since Dr. Nathanson had been one of the founders of NARAL , an organization that helped repeal laws that restricted abortion.  In his own words, Dr. Nathanson said, “I have such heavy moral baggage to drag into the next world.”  But he did not just stop performing abortions; he joined the work to change the perception of them as well.  He also scoffed at the idea that the trend of dropping from 1.6 million per year to 1.3 million was a sufficient answer to reversing the trend of abortions in America.

In his books, “Aborting America” and his autobiography “The Hand of God” he makes it clear that despite his earlier militancy on behalf of abortion rights, later in life he has no doubts that he was wrong.  What once motivated him to fight for the poor who might have been victims of back alley butchers then totally changed.  He in fact then turned to a deeper and more desperate fight for saving the lives of those still in the womb who he realized were indeed human lives as well.  In addition to the two books, he was also responsible for producing a film titled, “The Silent Scream”.  In addition to realizing that a fetus was really more than just formative tissue, this man also realized that in the 75,000 procedures he was part of, nearly 95% were for birth control as opposed to criminal and other causes for the pregnancies.  That is also true of all abortions performed in the USA, only 5% represent criminal or endangered mothers.   (Statistics confirmed by information from Planned Parenthood)

As we close this month’s focus on black history month, I was also shocked to see how African Americans have been victims of this blight on our society.  Since the records have been open to the public from organizations that provide this service, black women have lost children at more than two to three times their demographic representation in the USA.   Many who read this MMM each week are involved in investing or advising those who do.  I hope you will join me in taking a stand to avoid having investments in companies who make a profit from performing abortions.  Many of you will likely be prevented from even receiving this message today because firewalls prevent even open discussion of dealing with this most contentious issue.  Alistair Begg called on us recently to be “all in” about our faith.  I am asking you to be “all in” about not investing in this part of the marketplace!  It may be legal but as Paul also tells us, it is not always expedient for us to do things that would be a stumbling block to our brothers and sisters.  Allow Dr. Nathanson’s life to be an inspiration to all who can read and understand the issues and principalities that surround us.   To appreciate the life God gives all of us, I encourage you to watch this video in its entirety.  Thanks to Carol and Tom for sending it along:<>
Luke 6:35-36 (RSV) “But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish.  Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.”

SPECIAL REQUEST FOR ANYONE WHO HAS READ KINGDOM GAINS!  We would love for you to add a review of your thoughts about the book on or on Barnes and   Of course we are grateful to people like Randy Alcorn, Ron Blue, and Jim Tressel whose endorsements appear on the book itself, but it would also be helpful to us if others would share their thoughts about the book and its value to other possible readers.  Thanks again to all of you who have purchased and shared this book with so many others.  The feedback we have received is wonderful, keep it coming and don’t forget to tell others about our website at
