Drifting Farther From God; MMM 1-10-2011

Monday Morning Message, January 10, 2011

It’s not just the shootings from this week’s debacle in Arizona, that concern me but it is symbolic of our inability to take all of the lives around us as seriously as God does.  How often in a given day do we hear negative and insensitive comments about people and yet do nothing to challenge our friends to reach for a higher standard?  How many times do we choose to reduce others to just another “Republican”; “Democrat”; “conservative”; “liberal”; or ______________________________________( you name the stereotype)?

Terms like civility, respect, and obedience have somehow been relegated to the land of the loser.  In our reality shows, sports heroes, and other public icons, the controversial and confrontational characters seem to carry the day to an extent that those who exhibit the opposite of those traits are celebrated.  One of the reasons that we cannot offer positive alternatives from Biblical truth is that very few people are actually aware of the power or the words contained in God’s Word!  When you are confronted with comments and people who are stepping over the line and need to hear from you in respectful dissent, remember Jesus words from Matthew 5:11-12 (NIV):

“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

We all know nothing changes a person like the change when they give their heart to Jesus Christ and accept Him as their Savior.  In one of the most recent examples of well meaning legislators in Iowa, they tried to pass a law on individuals carrying firearms.  Their NEW law just enacted, allows gun owners to carry concealed weapons in bars as long as the gun owner is not intoxicated.  No mention in the law of what to do after the gun owner spends several hours at the bar or who is supposed to carry the weapon out of the bar!  We have millions of laws on the books that prove time and again that we cannot change people like God can.  Of course, we also have laws restricting our right to tell people about God.  Needless to say, telling students in our schools about the Good News of Christ is also quite forbidden!

Titus 2:11-12 (RSV) “For the grace of God has appeared for the salvation of all men, training us to renounce irreligion and worldly passions, and to live sober, upright, and godly lives in this world…”
