YOU WILL KNOW US BY OUR LOVE
Monday Morning Message, April 25, 2011
It’s Easter Monday, 2011 and all the sermons, sunrise services, and resurrection celebrations are still fresh in our hearts. Traditions are changing in our country and many believers are not part of a church on a regular basis. Why is it so hard to take the joy from Easter to our office, school, or workplace the next day? Why does Jesus’ suffering and resurrection seem to be a warm balm to our hearts when forgiving our sins, but so unwelcome in the public square? What happened with Jesus’ popularity rating when HE went from the highest on Palm Sunday, to the depths of despair on Good Friday? And from Easter Sunday morning right up to today, the world wrestles with the question of what will we do with Jesus after HE overcame death and offers forgiveness of sins to all who believe?
I couldn’t help but think about all of the people I have met and have known from Liberty University since being an invited guest there a few days back. They asked me to share thoughts about Biblically Responsible Investing (BRI) with students, faculty, and advisors that were part of the LU family. It was a great privilege for me to do so and it confirmed something in my mind about the quality of the people from this growing Christian academic institution. All of the people I have ever met, whether in the market place or on the mission field from Liberty are top shelf, first class, sold out believers who care about others more than themselves. This was again true of the students in the business school and especially true of the faculty who could be working in much higher paying positions, but are choosing to help young men and women prepare to be salt and light in the companies and board rooms of corporate America. Liberty now has over 12,000 students on campus with another 60,000 plus students on-line who are part of the LU family.
While serving on the board of the NACFC a few years back, we presented an award to Dr. Jerry Falwell, Sr. for his contributions to society. It was my pleasure to be able to speak with him briefly at that session when I could tell him personally, how thankful I was for his boldness in sharing his faith in the public square. Do not worry that I and others do not share all of the same exact opinions about everything, but one thing we do share, is the same risen Savior. Another thing we share is that the world has every right to look at our work and see if the LOVE of Christ shows thru! My experience is that the people I have met from LU are fruitful and show forth that Love in their work. Many thanks to all of you for all the work being done there and for your hospitality to me! Here is a place that has not lost sight of our traditions or responsibilities as believers. We can all learn from that!
Acts 1:10-11 (RSV) “And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, Men of Galilee, why do stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
